Panosteitis in Brief

Panosteitis is a painful growth disorder that effects the bones and muscles of the legs (or less frequently the pelvis) of a young dog.  It effects mostly large breed dogs, and mostly those below 2 years of age.  It is first recognized by severe lameness not associated with any trauma, that may effect more than one leg.  Sometimes the dog will also have a fever or other symptoms.  Panosteitis usually only lasts 2-5 months, during which time the dog must limit it's activity.

Although the it has been studied since the 1950s, there is still no known cause although treatments for the symptoms are known to be very successful.
